Our strategy is based on the following principles:
To integrate sustainability considerations into all of our business decisions;
To ensure that all staff members are committed to our sustainability vision and to its implementation;
To minimise the impact of our business activities on the environment;
To make clients and suppliers aware of our sustainability vision and encourage them, and, where possible, assist them in adopting sound sustainable management and related practices;
To annually review, report on, and continually strive to improve our sustainability performance.
Meredith Harington contracted Carbonworx to perform a carbon footprint audit in 2010 / 2011. The results of our audit indicated that we needed to plant a calculated number of trees to combat our direct damage on the environment. These trees are planted in a protected sanctuary and we have received the GPS co-ordinates so that we can track their growth. This is an exercise which we conduct each year.
By moving to a largely paperless environment, in which we have dispensed with the printing of most documents, working papers, correspondence, e-mails and financial statements, we have dramatically reduced the number of files in our offices. In doing so, we are making a small, yet valuable, contribution to the preservation of trees in the environment.
The first Arbour Day was celebrated in Nebraska, USA on 10 April 1872, as a means of promoting conservation and correcting the gradual deforestation of the prairie. More than one million trees were planted on that day. Many years and countless millions of trees later, the tradition of Arbour Day continues. Inscribed on a monument erected in memory of the Arbour Day founder, J. Sterling Morton, are the words: "Other holidays repose upon the past, Arbour Day proposes for the future." Going beyond our carbon footprint audit, Meredith Harington acknowledges Arbour Week by annually planting trees in a protected sanctuary – one for each staff member.
The Meredith Harington staff recycle all paper and glass through Oasis. We also deliver our used toner cartridges and computer equipment to our local E-Waste recycling depot.
At Meredith Harington we try, as far as possible, to use only those consumer cleaning products that are environmentally friendly (containing no ammonia, etc.). We have done our product research and have educated our staff as well.
